Podcast #10 explores Learning Forward’s new Professional Learning Standards, focusing on Implementation.  Our guest today is Shirley Hord, author, researcher, presenter, Scholar Laureate for Learning Forward, a master educator and an inspiration for many, including me!

Three Big Ideas:

•Provide Constructive Feedback

Implementation = CHANGE OVER TIME! It happens in the classroom/building/district.

Change requires attention, up to 3-4-5 years, for full implementation in classrooms.  Is the learning being transferred into the classroom?  Monitoring/checking on progress is critical.   Everyone (97%) needs support.

A building leader supports change by developing positive, warm, trusting relationships, as the foundation for change.  Leaders are available for individual interactions with all members of the staff. They have a deep understanding of the “content/the what” being implemented.  Leaders are quite skilled and talented and learners themselves.  They have the skills to provide feedback that supports the learner – not for the faint of heart!!

Six strategies for change leaders.  Vision, make a plan, engage/invest in professional learning, assess progress, provide support, create an environment conducive to change.

•Developmental growth in FEELINGS and SKILLS

There are three components: Stages of Concern, Levels of Use, and Innovation Configuration Maps.
Learning Forward has created Innovation Configuration Maps (word pictures) of each of the standards.  This provides clear expectations.  They can also be used for goal setting.

If we ask one question of a principal/leader that will help a group across the bridge, what might that be, Shirley?   “Are you willing to give the time, energy and attention that will be required to put this new practice in place in the classrooms of your building?”
